Description
Intended for expanding an existing Enphase IQ Balcony System; before disconnecting/connecting cables, de-energize the AC circuit and set the system switch on the gateway to OFF.

The Enphase Expansion Kit 1 (IQ‑BALC‑EXP‑01‑KIT) expands an existing IQ Balcony System by adding an IQ8HC microinverter including the appropriate connection hardware. The included IQ8HC‑72‑M‑INT operates with up to 380 VA apparent power (384 W max. AC output power) at 230 V / 50 Hz and uses integrated Stäubli MC4 DC connectors; the DC input voltage is rated up to 60 V, with an MPP range of 29.5–45 V. For system design, input limits such as a maximum DC operating current of 14 A and a permissible module Isc of 20 A (with standard safety factor according to IEC 62548) are also relevant. With protection rating IP67, protection class II, and natural convection cooling, the microinverter is suitable for outdoor use at the module.

  • TechnologieTechnologyTechnologically, the kit is based on an IQ8HC‑72‑M‑INT microinverter that converts DC close to the module into grid-compliant AC, providing up to 384 W maximum AC output power or 380 VA maximum apparent power. For electrical integration, a nominal grid voltage of 230 V and a nominal frequency of 50 Hz are decisive; permissible grid frequency limits are 45–55 Hz. On the DC side, a maximum input voltage of 60 V, an MPP voltage range of 29.5–45 V, a maximum DC input power of 560 W, and a maximum input current of 14 A are relevant for planning to properly match module selection and temperature window. The topology is galvanically isolated (HF transformer), which supports a robust integration profile depending on grid requirements and EMC environment.

    Electrical core parameters
    • 60 V DC maximum, start 22 V, MPP 29.5–45 V; design compatible with modules with permissible Isc.
    • 380 VA max. apparent power, 384 W max. AC output power; grid-tied at 230 V / 50 Hz.
    • Max. DC power 560 W, DC current 14 A; observe short-circuit current limits per IEC 62548.
  • KonnektivitätConnectivitySystem communication of the IQ8HC uses Power Line Communication (PLC) in the 110–120 kHz range (Class B) as a narrowband signal on the AC wiring; operating data and control information are transmitted via the IQ cabling to the gateway. For commissioning, Enphase specifies minimum versions of the Installer App (≥ 3.31.0) and notes that IQ8 systems should not be mixed with older microinverter generations (e.g., IQ7/IQ6) on the same gateway. Also practically relevant is electrical segmentation via IQ Cable: per 16‑A single-phase circuit, up to 9 IQ8HC devices are specified (or 27 devices in a three-phase configuration), whereby voltage rise at the point of connection may further limit the permissible number. The expansion set itself supplies the hardware addition (1× IQ8HC + connection material); monitoring/internet connectivity is provided in the IQ Balcony System via the existing gateway.

    Communication & grid design
    • PLC 110–120 kHz (Class B) over AC line; data/control without additional data cables.
    • Design limits: up to 9 IQ8HC per 16‑A (L+N) circuit; up to 27 units in three-phase systems, depending on voltage rise.
    • Commissioning requires Installer App ≥ 3.31.0; mixing IQ8 with IQ7/IQ6 on the same gateway not recommended.
  • GarantieWarrantyFor the Expansion Kit, the warranty of the included IQ8HC microinverter is decisive: Enphase specifies an industry-standard long-term limited warranty of up to 25 years for IQ8 microinverters; full 25‑year coverage is conditional on an internet-connected IQ Gateway. On the installation side, requirements for correct mounting/wiring must be observed, as safety and warranty conditions are typically tied to standards-compliant installation; in particular, de-energize AC before service work and do not disconnect connectors without setting the system to OFF at the gateway. Since the kit does not include the gateway, integration into an existing IQ Balcony System with gateway is the central project point for warranty and monitoring prerequisites.

    Warranty conditions in practice
    • Limited warranty up to 25 years for IQ8 microinverters; 25 years tied to an internet-connected IQ Gateway.
    • Service safety: de-energize AC; disconnect connectors only after system OFF at the gateway to avoid risks.
  • NachhaltigkeitSustainabilitySustainability-relevant aspects of the microinverter mainly include efficiency, standby losses, and regulated take-back/disposal: the IQ8HC‑72‑M‑INT achieves up to 97.4 % maximum efficiency and 96.8 % European weighted efficiency, reducing conversion losses over the lifetime. Night consumption is specified at 50 mW, minimizing the system’s own energy consumption, especially in small plug-in setups. In addition, a WEEE registration (DE 65410052) is filed for the German market, supporting integration into established take-back and recycling processes. The protection class II design with a double-insulated enclosure reduces the need for additional grounding/protective conductor routing at the device itself and simplifies compliant integration in many cases.

    Losses & disposal
    • Efficiency: ηmax 97.4 %, ηEU 96.8 %; reduced thermal and conduction losses over lifetime.
    • Night consumption 50 mW; relevant for system self-consumption in small systems and long idle periods.
    • WEEE registration DE 65410052; facilitates proper take-back/disposal in the project process.
  • QualitätQualityQuality and robustness characteristics of the IQ8HC are strongly defined by environmental and standards data: the microinverter is specified for ambient temperatures from −40 °C to +65 °C and 4–100 % relative humidity (condensing), supporting design for outdoor mounting at the module. The protection rating is specified as outdoor IP67; the corrosion-resistant, double-insulated polymer housing (protection class II) and natural convection cooling without a fan reduce wear points in field operation. EMC and safety standards (incl. EN IEC 62109‑1/‑2 and EN IEC 61000 series) are listed; additionally, grid support functions such as cos(phi) control (0.8 leading to 0.8 lagging) and THD < 5 % are specified, improving grid compatibility in typical installation environments.

    Robustness & standards
    • IP67, protection class II, convection-cooled without fan; robust field behavior for outdoor installation.
    • Environment: −40…+65 °C, 4–100 % RH condensing; planning for climate and humidity changes.
    • Grid quality: THD < 5 %, PF 1.0, cos(phi) 0.8 leading…0.8 lagging; project-safe parameterization.
  • ErweiterbarkeitExpandabilityExpansion Kit 1 is designed for the step-by-step expansion of an IQ Balcony setup and adds exactly one additional IQ8HC microinverter including connection material. In system planning, scaling is determined by circuit and cable segment limits: Enphase specifies up to 9 IQ8HC devices in a 16‑A single-phase branch or up to 27 devices in a three-phase configuration, as well as design guidelines of 8 (L+N) or 18 (3L+N) for a single IQ cable segment; center feeding is highlighted as best practice to manage voltage drop/voltage rise. For the IQ Balcony Gateway, expandability up to 7 IQ8HC units is specified in the IBC system context, representing a clear upper limit in the field for balcony/plug-in topologies. Thus, the kit is primarily a building block to increase module count and AC power level in a controlled manner within the applicable grid and device limits.

    Scaling in the system context
    • Kit contents: 1× IQ8HC + connection material; targeted expansion by exactly one module channel.
    • Circuit limits: up to 9 IQ8HC per 16‑A (L+N) or 27 in three-phase systems; consider voltage rise.
    • IQ cable segment: 8 (L+N) or 18 (3L+N) as guideline; center feeding as best practice.
    • IQ Balcony context: expandability up to 7 IQ8HC per gateway specified; relevant for bills of materials and system limits.
