Description
>The Enphase Expansion Kit 2 is used for the targeted expansion of an existing EnphaseIQBalconySystem. The set includes two IQ8HC microinverters as well as the associated connection materials and enables scaling of the installed AC power within the system-defined limits. By integrating additional module capacity via module-based inverters, the central architecture remains unchanged while energy generation per area is increased. IQ8 technology operates with high conversion efficiency and supports module-specific power control. The expansion set is fully compatible with existing IQBalconyGateways and is integrated into the existing AC distribution concept without requiring additional control or protection components. Its use is particularly suitable for retrofits where available module areas are expanded at a later stage.

  • TechnologyTechnologyFrom a technological standpoint, Expansion Kit 2 is based on the Enphase IQ8 microinverter platform. Each IQ8HC operates grid-parallel and converts the DC power of individual PV modules directly into grid-compliant AC power. Module-level conversion reduces losses caused by mismatch and allows precise power adjustment per module. With a DC input voltage of up to 60V and an AC nominal power of 380VA per unit, the IQ8HC is suitable for higher-output balcony and small modules. The high maximum efficiency of 97.5% supports economical continuous operation even at partial load. The IP67 protection rating allows permanent outdoor use at the installation site.

    Technical core characteristics
    • Module-specific DC-AC conversion to reduce shading and mismatch losses
    • Integrated grid monitoring in accordance with microinverter-based system topology
    • High efficiency for stable yields with limited connection capacity
  • ConnectivityConnectivityThe connectivity of the expansion kit results from the integration of the IQ8HC inverters into the existing IQBalcony system. Communication and monitoring are handled via the existing Balcony Gateway, so no additional communication hardware is required. The microinverters transmit operating and performance data to the gateway via Enphase’s proprietary powerline-based communication concept, which ensures connection to the monitoring platform. For installers, this reduces configuration effort, as extensions are automatically integrated into system monitoring.

    System integration
    • Use of the existing gateway infrastructure without additional interface components
    • Central monitoring of all modules via Enphase monitoring
    • Automatic detection of newly added microinverters in the system
  • WarrantyWarrantyThe Expansion Kit 2 is covered by the standard Enphase product warranty for IQ8 microinverters. This covers material and workmanship defects and is designed for continuous operation in grid-connected PV systems. For operators and planners, this means long-term protection of the central power electronics components, which is particularly relevant for small-scale, decentralized systems. Warranty conditions are uniform across the system and apply regardless of whether the inverters are installed as part of an initial installation or as part of an expansion.

    Warranty relevance
    • Long-term protection of core power electronics components
    • Uniform warranty conditions for existing and expanded systems
  • SustainabilitySustainabilityWith regard to sustainability, Expansion Kit 2 supports demand-oriented system expansion without having to replace existing components. The modular retrofit capability extends the service life of the overall system and reduces exchange-related material losses. Thanks to the high efficiency of the IQ8HC inverters, conversion losses are minimized, improving the specific energy yield per installed module. The decentralized architecture also contributes to even load distribution and stable operation in low-power ranges.

    Resource efficiency
    • Retrofit concept avoids unnecessary dismantling of existing technology
    • High efficiency reduces system-related energy losses
  • QualityQualityThe quality of the expansion kit is largely determined by the robust design of the IQ8HC microinverters. The fully encapsulated housing with IP67 protection reliably protects the power electronics against moisture, dust, and mechanical influences. The integrated DC connectors with MC4 plug system ensure safe and standards-compliant module connections. Thanks to the shallow installation depth and moderate weight, the units can be mounted directly on the module or substructure in an installation-friendly manner.

    Mechanical design
    • IP67 housing for permanent outdoor installation
    • Standardized connectors for secure DC connections
  • ExpandabilityExpandabilityExpandability is the core purpose of Expansion Kit 2. With two additional IQ8HC inverters, an existing IQBalcony system can be selectively expanded without changing its basic configuration. Within the permissible system limits, further expansion kits can be added, allowing installers to react flexibly to subsequent power requirements or additional module areas. The modular concept simplifies planning, as each expansion is electrically and communicatively integrated into the existing structure.

    Scalable system design
    • Flexible retrofit of additional module capacity
    • No adjustment of the central system architecture required
    • Planning security through clearly defined expansion stages
