Description

The SMA Sunny Boy 3.6 Smart Energy is a single-phase hybrid inverter for grid-connected PV systems with optional battery integration. With 3.6kVA AC nominal power, three MPP trackers, and a maximum DC voltage of 600V, the device supports flexible string configurations even for different roof orientations. The hybrid topology enables the direct coupling of compatible high-voltage batteries as well as the use of integrated backup power functions. With a high efficiency of up to 97.8% and low self-consumption during night operation, system efficiency remains high even under partial load conditions. The IP65 protection rating allows installation in technical rooms or protected outdoor areas. Typical applications include single-family homes and smaller multi-family buildings with self-consumption-optimized PV generation and optional storage expansion.

  • TechnologyTechnologyThe power electronics design of the Sunny Boy 3.6 Smart Energy is optimized for hybrid operating modes. Three independent MPP trackers with an MPP voltage range of 60to480V enable differentiated module configuration and reduce yield losses caused by partial shading. The maximum DC input power of up to 7.2kW allows targeted overdimensioning to optimize yields. On the AC side, the inverter feeds single-phase power at a nominal voltage of 230V with a maximum current of up to 16A. The transformerless topology reduces losses and supports compact designs.

    Power electronics
    • Three MPP trackers enable flexible string layout for complex roof geometries and increase planning flexibility.
    • High DC oversizing supports higher annual yields with limited generator area.
    • Transformerless design reduces weight and improves partial-load efficiency.
    • Single-phase feed-in with stable grid monitoring for typical residential connection points.
  • ConnectivityConnectivityFor system integration, the inverter provides several communication interfaces. Ethernet, WLAN, and RS485 enable integration into existing monitoring and energy management systems. Connection to SMA’s own portals allows detailed operational monitoring as well as remote parameterization. Standardized protocols such as Modbus also allow integration of third-party solutions, for example for energy management or load control. This openness simplifies integration into more complex system concepts with heat pumps, charging infrastructure, or metering systems.

    Interfaces
    • Ethernet and WLAN enable flexible network architecture without additional gateways.
    • RS485 interface supports stable fieldbus communication in extended systems.
    • Modbus support simplifies integration into manufacturer-independent energy management solutions.
  • WarrantyWarrantyThe Sunny Boy 3.6 Smart Energy is supplied with a standard product warranty of five years. This covers intended operation under the specified environmental conditions. For planners and installation companies, the clearly defined warranty period provides planning certainty for maintenance and service concepts. Optional extended service and warranty packages are available, which can be considered as part of larger system concepts.

    Warranty scope
    • Five-year standard product warranty for grid-connected hybrid operation.
  • SustainabilitySustainabilityBy combining PV and battery inverter functions, the device supports increasing the self-consumption of renewable energy. The high European efficiency of over 96% minimizes system-related losses over the year. The option for backup and emergency power supply increases supply security and reduces dependence on the public grid. The low night consumption of less than 6W further contributes to efficiency during standby operation.

    Energy efficiency
    • High efficiency reduces long-term generation losses and system costs.
    • Combination with storage enables grid-relieving self-consumption.
  • QualityQualityThe IP65-rated enclosure reliably protects the power electronics against dust and water jets. With dimensions of 586×500×236mm and a weight of 17.5kg, the device is designed for single-person installation. The permissible operating temperature range of −25to+60°C allows use in a wide range of climate zones. Passive cooling reduces wear and maintenance effort.

    Mechanical design
    • Compact design simplifies installation in confined technical rooms.
    • IP65 enables installation in protected outdoor areas.
    • Passive cooling increases reliability due to reduced component stress.
  • ExpandabilityExpandabilityThe inverter is designed for the later expansion of the energy system. Coupling with compatible high-voltage batteries and energy management components enables gradual expansion. Additional consumers, metering systems, or charging infrastructure can be integrated via the available communication interfaces. This modular system architecture supports long-term adaptation to increasing performance or autonomy requirements.

    System expansion
    • Prepared for battery integration without replacing the inverter.
    • Integration of external energy management and charging equipment possible.
